Day 30: Atlanta Greek Festival

Opa!

If you don't go for the culture, if you don't go for the dancing, if you don't go for the shopping, then please:  GO FOR THE FOOD!  Your mouth will thank us later.  The Atlanta Greek Festival happens once a year during the Fall and is one of the coolest ethnic festivals in the city.

The educational lecture about the Church is one of my favorite reasons for going.  Now, keep in mind, I'm a Religion nerd, but even if you're not into lectures, it's only about 20 minutes long and they answer pretty much everything you've ever wanted to know and didn't learn from My Big Fat Greek Wedding!  Local Greek dancers as young as 5 years old show off their moves and there is music throughout the Festival.  There is also an outdoor coffee shop, a beer stand, and tons of shops that are set up inside the Greek school classrooms.

But now let's get back to the food.  Dozens of Greek women bake Greek pastries to sell for all three days of the Festival.  Baklava, Kataifi and my favorite, Galaktoboureko, a custard like pastry with a sweet syrup on top.  It's a good thing you can only get all of these once a year, or I might be in trouble.  And lest we not forget the main courses...  All of the wonderful Greek dishes are served outside and there is nothing prettier than a sunset over the Cathedral.

All of the gold work, mosaics, and stained glass are just breathtaking!
